Tri-Chandra Military hospital (TCMH), established in 1925 AD (BS 1982) in honor of Nepalese soldiers who dedicated their life in the First Great War was considered one of the best modern hospitals of its time. Besides the historical identity and its architectural grandeur, TCMH has many more glories attached to its name. It was the first hospital to introduce fiber optic endoscope services and establish semi automatic pathology lab in the country. Its upgraded services were shifted to Shree Birendra Hospital (SBH) in Chhauni, Kathmandu in 1989 availing new technology and treatment modalities like MRI and Extra Corporeal Shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), multislice Helical CT for the first time in Nepal. The transformation of TCMH services to SBH and subsequently NAIHS moving in on this footing has been considered major milestones in the history of Nepalese Army Medical Corps (NAMC).
The concept of NAIHS originated with the imminent need to improve patient care system within Nepalese Army Medical corps which could only be achieved by igniting medical potentialities of its health professionals with academic fire by having a medical institute of its own. There is an acute short fall of the qualified Health professionals in the country and Nepalese army Medical corps (NAMC) is no exempt.
Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences (NAIHS) took off with its two wings namely college of Medicine (COM) and College of Nursing (CON) in September 2010 and since then its journey has remained uphill and uninterrupted receiving a series of accolades in a short span of time. The institute is all set to launch its college of Medical polytechnic any time and a college of Dentistry, it’s yet another wing in the years to come.
The COM will begin its post graduate program soon after the completion of the internship of its first batch MBBS appearing in their final university examination in December 2016. NAIHS-CON has been recognized as the best nursing college of the country in 2013 on the basis of its cent percent result and other exemplary parameters. One of its students has been awarded by the president of Nepal with chhatra vidhyapadak and Nepal Vidyabhushan- ‘ga’ for her meritorious nationwide best performance.
NAIHS-COM has become the institution of prime preference amongst the students aspiring for MBBS and Nursing study in Nepal by virtue of its robust infrastructure, uninterrupted academic environment, high moral values and discipline. The students in NAIHS are looked upon very closely and congenially in order to enhance their knowledge, skill and over all personality. NAIHS envisages upon imparting quality medical education of international standard by fostering an integrated and holistic model in academics and extracurricular activities with an emphasis in community based learning to produce well disciplined and skilled health workforce to meet the country’s need and also to function as a center of excellence in the field of medical education.
NAIHS stands in the pillars of discipline, integrity and transparency and takes the pride of an institution to follow the guidelines of Tribhuwan University, Institute of Medicine (TU-IOM) and Nepal Medical Council (NMC) to the best possible precision on issues of merit based admission, fee structure, curriculum, academic calendar and the institutional requirement to run a specific program.
