Carleton University is a community of talented, committed and enthusiastic faculty and staff, dedicated to excellence and to supporting the education and research that distinguishes Carleton as Canada’s Capital University. We know that it is our people that are key to Carleton’s success. We take pride in our institution and are committed to providing the programs and services that contribute to Carleton University being an employer of choice.
Carleton University’s roots as a non-denominational college supported in part by charitable donations from the Ottawa community make it unique among Ontario universities. Founded in 1942, Carleton was created in response to the need to help provide the young people in Ottawa, many of whom had taken on jobs to cope with the pressures of the Depression, with an opportunity to continue their formal education. From its humble beginnings on Ottawa’s First Avenue, Carleton has grown into a dynamic research and teaching institution with a tradition of anticipating and leading change. Today, the university sits on more than 100 acres, on a site between the Rideau River and the Rideau Canal, just a short distance from downtown Ottawa.
The university provides an excellent education and experience to its more than 24,000 full- and part-time students at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Its more than 875 academic staff are recognized internationally for their scholarship and cutting-edge research in more than 50 disciplines. Carleton’s reputation is built on its strengths in the fields of journalism, public affairs, international affairs, architecture and high technology. Its students benefit from the interdisciplinary, active, hands-on approach to teaching and research practiced by its faculty members and from the numerous partnerships the university has with the federal government, other universities and private sector partners.
The United Nations ranked Canada as one of the best places in the world to live, based on Canada's achievements in terms of educational attainment, life expectancy, national income and general quality of life, among other things.
1.Best place to live
A Canadian degree, certificate, and diploma is considered equivalent to the degrees in other Commonwealth countries and the US. Canada’s universities maintain high standards of academic excellence and are consistently recognised in top international rankings. In 2012, four Canadian universities: University of British Columbia, McGill University, McMaster University and University of Toronto, were listed in the top 100 colleges by ARWU Shanghai Rankings. The QS University Ranking had five more: Universität de Montréal, HEC Montréal University of Alberta, Queen's University, University of Waterloo in its list of top 100s.
2.Amongst the best places to study
Canada's universities maintain high standards of academic excellence and are consistently recognized in top international rankings.
3.Internationally recognized degrees
Each year hundreds of thousands of international students attend Canadian colleges and universities. Their degrees are recognized around the world as being equivalent to those obtained from the United States or Commonwealth countries.
4.A multicultural country
Canada is home to a large number of aboriginal people (First Nations, Inuit and Métis), and over the past century and a half it has welcomed 15 million immigrants. With some 200,000 new immigrants from more than 175 countries arriving every year Canada receives the highest percentage of newcomers in the world relative to its population of over 34 million.
5.A safe, stable country
Canada is a peaceful, politically stable, and safe democracy and it is rarely affected by natural disasters. Almost 70 per cent of international students involved in a CBIE survey cited Canada's reputation as a safe country as an important reason for deciding to study here.
6. Opportunity to immigrate
After studying in Canada, you may want to settle down there permanently, which happens with most students owing to the lucrative combination of opportunities and the quality of life the great North-American nation offers. After completing the degree and gaining a work experience of a year, you can apply for a permanent citizenship, which usually takes 15-18 months to process
7. Multicultural country with deep democratic values
Canada is a country of immigrants and follows a policy of fostering multicultural diversity. The Canadian society comprises of almost all of the world's ethnic groups. You will easily find most ethnic foods and cultural activities. You will easily find informal clubs and associations representing various ethnicities. People of Canada are generally very open minded and respectful of different perspectives. Over the past century and a half, Canada has welcomed 15 million immigrants. Canada is also home to over one million aboriginal people, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.
8. Easier visa acquisition
One of the most exciting aspect while considering studying in Canada is that the process of acquiring a Canadian study visa is relatively relaxed. Students increasingly face issues and complain about the strict visa norm of the US. It has led to international students being diverted to other countries. The Canadian government has left no stone unturned in reaping the benefits of the tightened US visa system post 9/11.
9. Care and Safety
The Government and Universities plays an important role for the safety of students inside the university and across the country. Starting from health care to security, necessary measures will be taken to keep students safe. Students enjoy all sorts of freedom and government ensures protection with respect to human rights, equality that help the society to be peaceful. Medical insurance is very inexpensive in almost every hospital in Canada. Canada has been considered as one of the best places to live by the United Nations consistently for the past eight years.
